Occupational Group

Definition: Occupational employment structure consisting of 22 major occupational categories based on Standard Occupational Coding (SOC) which consists of over 800 occupations.

Producer: The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)

Scope: BLS originated the occupational employment structure. Based on staffing patterns, the BLS uses it to generate the Occupational Employment Survey. These tailored survey forms list typical occupations for industries assigned specific North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. Employers complete the survey for their full and part time employees who worked during the months of May and November. Major exemptions include services performed by some workers in agriculture, domestic services in private households, religious and charitable organizations, interstate railroads, family workers, and self-employed.

Frequency: Semi-annual collection. Annual publication.

Geography: Statewide, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), County, Economic Development Region, and Workforce Development Board.

Classification: Standard Occupational Classifications (SOC) broken out into over 800 occupations.
